Title of Document: MINIATURE FIBER OPTIC PRESSURE SENSORS FOR INTERVERTEBRAL DISC PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS IN RODENTS Silas Nesson, M.S., 2007 Directed By: Assistant Professor Miao Yu, Department of Mechanical Engineering Mechanical stress due to interstitial fluid pressures can play a major role in the development of disc degeneration, a common cause of lower back pain. Pressures generated in the intervertebral disc have previously been measured in humans and animals. However, due to their small size, thus far it has been difficult to experimentally measure pressures in rodents. With the prevalent use of rodent disc models in mechanobiology, it is important to characterize the intradiscal pressures under externally applied stresses. In this thesis research, two different optical systems with novel miniature fiber optic pressure sensors have been developed. These systems are an intensity based solid-tip sensor system and a low coherence FabryPerot sensor system. Pressure sensors, which have diameters of only 363 μm, were designed to measure pressures in rat discs without disrupting the structure and altering the intradiscal pressures. For the first time, in vitro intradiscal pressure measurements of rodents have been successfully demonstrated by using these sensors. Miniaturized Fiber Optic Sensor for Measuring Intervertebral Disc Pressure
This paper reports the development of a miniature fiber optic pressure sensor system for in vitro intradiscal pressure measurements for rodents. The primary focus of this work is the design and fabrication of a sensor element with a multi-layer polymer-metal diaphragm. This diaphragm consists of a base polyimide layer (150 nm thick), a metal reflective layer (1 μm thick), and another polyimide ...
متن کاملTemperature and Pressure Fiber - Optic Sensors Applied to Minimally Invasive Diagnostics and Therapies
We present how fiber-optic temperature or pressure sensors could be applied to minimally invasive diagnostics and therapies. For instance a miniature pressure sensor based on micro-optical mechanical systems (MOMS) could solve most of the problems associated with fluidic pressure transduction presently used for triggering purposes. These include intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) therapy and o...
متن کاملPressure measurement with fiber-optic sensors: commercial technologies and applications [7753-500]
Mainly three technologies are presently commercially available for pressure measurement with fiber-optic sensors: intensity-based, fiber Bragg gratings and Fabry-Pérot. The first one is probably the simplest and the cheapest but it is limited to applications where having 2 fixed or up to 4 flexible fibers is not an issue, whereas the two other technologies require only one fiber. With generally...
متن کاملA family of fiber-optic based pressure sensors for intracochlear measurements
Fiber-optic pressure sensors have been developed for measurements of intracochlear pressure. The present family of transducers includes an 81 μm diameter sensor employing a SLED light source and single-mode optic fiber, and LED/multi-mode sensors with 126 and 202 μm diameter. The 126 μm diameter pressure sensor also has been constructed with an electrode adhered to its side, for coincident pres...

OBJECTIVES To assess the reliability of intradiscal pressure measurement during in vitro biomechanical testing. In particular, the variability of measurements will be assessed for repeated measures by considering the effect of specimens and of freezing/thawing cycles.
